Into the Temple of Karnak

There are two important features that you will come upon on your way to the entrance of the first pylon. The first, is a stone wall and embankment which is believed to have held back the waters of the Nile. This new excavation has uncovered evidence that the Nile once ran right along side this pylon. This area is known as the Quay. The Quay was discovered by accident while building a new tourist plaza.
    The next discovery you make is a dromos of ram-headed sphinx. These were put here by the workers of Ramesses II. The criosphinx is a symbol of the god Amen-Re. Each sphinx is a beautiful work of art. A small representation of Ramesses II is protected between the paws of each sphinx.







    A colusal statue of Ramesses II stands in front of pylon II. During Ramesses time this was the front of the temple of Karnak. The avenue of ram-headed sphinx began here and extended out to the quay. During that time the open air courtyard had not been built and the quay may have been closer to this pylon. It is Ramesses II who was responsible for the construction of this pylon as well as the Ave of sphinx that at one time went from here to the
