. . . . .We go down a short flight of steps into the burial chamber of Ramesses I. This tomb has been restored, the framework that you see is to support the ceiling that was collapsing when it was discovered in 1817 by Giovanni Belzoni. In front of us stands the huge, red quartzite sarcophagus in which the mummy of Ramesses I was laid to rest. The walls in this chamber are the only decorated part of the tomb, probably due to his short reign as pharaoh. The walls are decorated with scenes from the "Book of Gates" A religious text similar to the Book of the Dead. |
